“Which are you most comfortable with?” Star asks. I reach down and grab the .38 special while Darcy grabs the shotgun. Star tucks the .22 in her belt and hooks the strap of the rifle over her shoulder. We peer out the attic window and see Nick’s mom’s car laying in fiery pieces across the lawn. “Jesus Christ.” Star says.

I watch a truck make its way down the long gravel drive leaving a cloud of dust behind it. “Who’s that?” I ask. Darcy repositions her shotgun before she answers.

“My father,” she responds. The truck slams to a stop and a tall thin man with dark hair, wearing sunglasses and cowboy boots exits the truck. Before he closes the door he reaches in and grabs a black felt Stetson and secures it on his head.

“Senor Ramsey. How nice to see you again.” the boss calls out.

“Don’t you ever summon me again, Vargas.” Darcy’s dad snarls.

“Tsk tsk, Vernon. That’s not a very nice way of talking to the man who’s going to solve all your problems.”

“Yeah, when I see it I’ll believe it. Right now you're nothing more than another pain in my ass I don’t need.”

“I’m going.” Darcy starts for the trap door.

“No! No way, Darcy,” Star grabs her. “We’re going to wait for the men to get here."

“No, I’m not. You two are but I’m facing off with my father now.” She yanks free of Star’s grip.

“Please, Darcy, Don’t go down there alone.” I plead.

“If he’s gone this far to keep me away from Levi, he’s desperate. He’s willing to do anything and only my safety will get him what he wants. If I go down, I’ll also be in a position to make sure no one gets hurt.” she tells us and kneels down and undoes the latch on the trap door. As she starts to climb down, Star pulls out a few extra shells of ammunition. She kneels down and hands them to Darcy, who sticks it in her back pocket and begins descending.

When she’s out of view, I grab extra ammo for my .38, and Star grabs some extra for her .22. We share a look and then Star starts down the stairs and I follow.

When we reach the bottom, Star takes another path and we find ourselves scooting along the walls with our backs flat against them. It’s tighter than the rest. Finally, we get to another panel and Star cracks it open just enough to listen for noises. When nothing is heard, she slides it a little more open and we squeeze through. We’ve come into another bedroom; one closest to the stairs.

Star raises her gun as we make our way towards the hallway. My gun is at my side but ready to go. As we turn the corner, we see movement. Darcy walks right up to the man named Vargas and stops in front of her father with tears in her eyes.

“I knew you were bad. Greedy and mean but you’re more than that.
